Go RV Reviews Flat Out: Why Real Drink-Safe Hoses Matter

Posted by Zoe Van Mill on

We were absolutely thrilled to be featured recently by David from Go RV, who took the time to review our products and share his insights on caravan water safety. It is always exciting to be included in such a trusted platform, especially when the topic is as vital as the quality of the water you and your family drink while on the road.

The "Food Grade" Myth
In his review, David shared a personal story that serves as a serious warning for all travelers. He previously bought a standard "food grade" hose, only to discover black algae growing inside it after cutting it open a few years later. As David pointed out, "not all food grade hoses are the same".

He highlighted a crucial distinction in safety standards:

  • AS 2070: This standard simply means a hose is manufactured from food-grade materials.
  • AS 4020: This is the higher standard that Flat Out meets. It involves much stricter controls and testing to ensure the hose does not leech plastic or harbor bacteria on the surface.

Why Material and Design Matter
To meet these stringent anti-microbial needs, Flat Out hoses are made from PU (Polyurethane), which is the safest material for this application.

However, safety isn't just about the material; it is also about the design. David noted that standard round hoses can trap more than half a liter of stagnant water and air when stored, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.

In contrast, David demonstrated how the Flat Out hose "reverts back to its flat position" as you wind it, effectively expelling all water and air. This unique flat-packing capability means there is minimal moisture and air left inside, significantly reducing the opportunity for bacteria to grow.

The Verdict
David was "so impressed with the Flat Out concept" that he also invested in our sullage hose—which ensures no dirty gray water gets into the van—and our compact Multi-Reel. He concluded that while our hoses might cost a little more than the bargain options, they are the "best in the business" and worth the peace of mind for maximum hygiene.

We are proud to offer an Aussie-manufactured product that helps keep your travel water safe!

Analogy:
Using a standard round hose is like leaving a water bottle half-full in a warm car for months—it creates a stagnant environment where things can grow. Using a Flat Out hose is like squeezing a tube of toothpaste; the mechanical action forces everything out, leaving no space for air or water to hide, ensuring the tube stays fresh for the next use.
