If you have room for two

Plenty of travellers carry a 12 m for close-range sites and a 20 m for everything else, so the short one is easy to handle most of the time and the long one only comes off the shelf when it's needed (not that it's hard our way either, but hey, we're all about ultra-maximum-convenience here).

If that suits how you travel, start with the 12 m and the 20 m heavy duty instead. If you'd rather carry one lead and 20 feels too big or long, this 15m is the one for you.

Please read this before you choose

Australian Standards changed. For caravan supply leads over 15 metres, a 2.5mm² core is now the recommended size. That recommendation is about performance rather than safety: this lead is a safe, compliant electrical product, and our own measurements put it comfortably inside the 5% voltage drop limit. What it no longer is, is the recommended specification for powering a caravan at this length.

Plenty of people will use it on a van and never notice. We'd rather you chose it knowing that, than found out later. Read the full explanation, with the voltage drop numbers before you decide, or go straight to the 2.5mm² version.

A couple of things to note

Thicker cores aren't needed on shorter leads. Over a shorter distance the same amount of power arrives anyway, so for 15m and under, 1.5mm² core does the same job.

If you aren't doing much more than keeping a battery charged, or your power use is moderate, this one is probably overkill. Have a look at the 20 m 1.5mm² instead, or read our blog on deciding which lead.

But, if your van or tool is a bit needy, pick this lead-ey!

If you need to reach further, the 30 m is the same lead on the bigger Original reel. And if you are looking for a lead to power your caravan, look at a 15 amp lead instead. Plenty of people carry both, because they serve different needs.

More on 10 amp and a 15 amp

Most travellers who buy this one already own a 15 amp lead. The Epic Electrics bundle has both leads on Compact Multi-Reels in a padded bag.
And if the only power where you are parked is a 10 amp point but your van is 15 amp, the piece you need is the Ampfibian adaptor, not a 10 amp lead.

Zoe here, true story. Somehow I had taken this lead out of my caravan before a trip to Red Rock. I was there four days and needed to work on a couple of things. The only wifi was near the cafe, my laptop had no charge, and the closest power point was nowhere near a table. Why our leads are like this

A customer called recently and gave us the sweetest compliment: "I haven't seen leads like this for 30 years. Thank you for making things like they used to." He meant a time when things were made to be good, and made to last, maybe before the cheap alternative filled the shelves.

This cabling has been available in Australia for years, but only to electricians, who buy it by the metre and terminate the ends themselves. We brought out our range of silicone leads when we realised there was a gap, and because we wanted leads that wound smoothly onto our Multi-Reels the first time and every time. This one, and every other lead we make, is a joy to use.

Every so often someone asks us for a lead with a 15 A socket on one end and a 10 A plug on the other, or has a mate make one up. Please don't. That oversized earth pin on a 15 A plug isn't a quirk of design, it's a lock: it exists so a 15 A load can't be plugged into a 10 A circuit. A home made lead picks the lock, and then there's nothing left to stop your van pulling more than the house wiring was built for. This adaptor puts the limit back.

Why Ampfibian?

Sizing for brackets is determined by the depth of the Multi-Reel/stacked pair rather than the diameter of the front face which is how we size them for stacking (ie a compact Multi-Reel is 30cm wide yet Narrow and Original are 37cm wide). Measure depth by laying the Mulit-Reel face-up flat on a table and taking the height of the curved side.
