Taste-Free Drinking Water Hoses – What Do AS2070 and AS4020 Mean?

At Flat Out, safe drinking water is non-negotiable. That's why our Teal drink water hoses are manufactured using materials that comply with both AS2070 and the higher AS4020 requirements for potable water applications.
AS2070 is the Australian standard covering plastics and materials intended for contact with food and drinking water. It ensures the materials used are safe, non-toxic, and suitable for potable water use. In fact, many caravan drinking water hoses on the market are manufactured solely to AS2070 requirements.
AS4020 goes a step further. In addition to material safety, it includes requirements relating to taste, odour, microbial growth and the effect materials may have on drinking water quality. This makes it the benchmark standard for products intended to carry drinking water in Australia.
Our hose specifications have been developed to meet AS4020 requirements and AS4020 compliance is a mandatory requirement we place on our suppliers. We hold supporting documentation from internationally recognised testing bodies confirming the materials meet these requirements. In several areas, our specifications exceed the minimum requirements of the standard.
At present, we are working through the Australian certification process. As a result, we describe our hoses as AS4020 compliant rather than AS4020 certified. The distinction is simply that the Australian certification paperwork is still being finalised. The hose itself has been manufactured to meet the standard.
You'll notice our product labelling currently references AS2070. When the labels were originally designed and printed, we had not yet completed the full development and validation process for the hose. At that stage, AS2070 was the only claim we were prepared to make.
As development progressed, we were able to achieve specifications that meet AS4020 requirements as well. Rather than discard existing packaging, we continued using the AS2070-labelled stock while completing the Australian certification process.
The bottom line is simple: our Teal hoses are designed and manufactured specifically for drinking water use, deliver excellent taste-free performance, and are built to meet the same stringent requirements expected of AS4020-compliant drinking water products.
