Why We Reduced the Length of the Main Flat Out Drink Water Hoses

Posted by Charry Laurente on

In the world of caravan/motorhome live, every piece of equipment matters – especially your hoses. At Flat Out, we’re committed to ensuring our products are not only durable and reliable but also designed to make your adventures as smooth and stress-free as possible.

That’s why we’ve made some thoughtful changes to the lengths of hoses in our main range. Here’s a closer look at what’s new, why we made these changes, and how they’ll benefit you on the road.

Shorter Hoses in the Main Range

We’ve made some adjustments to the lengths of our traditional hoses:

  • The 10m hose is replaced by the already popular 7.5m hose.

  • The 15m hose is superseded by a 12.5m hose.

If you’re thinking, What if I still need the extra length? – don’t worry. Pairing a 2.5m extension hose with a joiner allows you to create your desired 10m or 15m configurations when needed, with the added bonus of increased versatility.

Introducing the 2.5m Premium Short RV Drink Water Hose

We’re excited to launch our new 2.5m premium drink water hose, a versatile addition to your setup.  Ideal for:

  • connecting a filter to your van,
  • using as an extension hose,
  • or filling your tank over short distances,

This compact hose has quickly become a customer favourite. Its short length makes it light, compact (rolled it fits in your hand), and easy to handle – perfect for those quick jobs where a longer hose would be overkill. It’s also the ideal companion for our modular hose system, giving you the flexibility to extend your reach when needed without unnecessary bulk.

Why We Shortened Our Caravan Hoses

These updates are based on extensive market research, customer feedback, and real-world trials. Here’s what we discovered:

  • Most Connections Don’t Require Long Hoses: While new RV owners often believe longer hoses are a must, experienced users understand that shorter, more manageable lengths cover most setups.

  • Modular Systems are More Practical: A shorter base hose combined with extensions provides flexibility without the hassle of storing and handling one bulky length. This modular concept has already been a hit with our sullage kits for years.

  • Thicker, Tougher Hoses: By reducing length, we’ve been able to slightly increase the thickness of our hoses, making them even more durable.

  • Ease of Use: Shorter hoses are easier to pack and less cumbersome during frequent “moving house” days on the road.

Lessons from the Road: A Story from Our General Manager

Michael, our General Manager, who joined Flat Out after completing a lap of Australia in 2023 with his family, has firsthand experience with these challenges.

On his trip he used a 15m Flat Out hose and a 1.5m filter attachment during their trip. While the 15m hose was occasionally useful, he found it cumbersome to set up and pack away – especially when moving campsites every few days.

“Most of the time, I only needed about 6m of hose,” he says. “The 15m was overkill and made things harder than they needed to be. Sometimes I’d even manoeuvre the caravan closer to a tap just so the 1.5m hose would reach!”

Reflecting on his experience, he notes that if he were to do the trip again, he’d opt for two 7.5m hoses instead. “That way, I’d have the flexibility for longer connections but could also enjoy the convenience of a shorter hose most of the time.”

Experience the Benefits

With these changes, we’re confident that our hose range is now better tailored to the needs of all caravan and RV enthusiasts. Whether you’re just starting your adventures or have years of experience under your belt, the new lengths provide the perfect balance of practicality, durability, and versatility.
